About BeProximity

BeProximity’s mission is to promote unity and belonging for the African diaspora in America by challenging negative stereotypes surrounding dark skin through the anthropologic tool of proximity.

Proximity, founded in 2020, emerged in response to the public and brutal murder of George Floyd. Several friends from diverse racial backgrounds formed a group to engage in nuanced conversations surrounding systemic racism and the historical racial construct of America. Witnessing the growth of the Black population in San Benito County and recognizing the racial challenges faced by ethnic communities, this dedicated group sought to engage the community meaningfully. In 2021, we accomplished this through our inaugural event, Proximity, which has since evolved into BeProximity, our nonprofit organization.

BeProximity is committed to building and fostering community with and for people who are racially classified as Black in America. Working alongside a diverse community, the purpose of BeProximity is to address systemic racism and foster genuine relationships through education, conversation, and cultural celebration. The purpose of BeProximity is to present  impactful events that bring Black historical education, Black experiential conversation, and Black cultural celebration to the forefront. In February, we will host our fourth annual event, demonstrating our sustained commitment to these goals. BeProximity aims to create a space where all individuals can come together to learn, celebrate, and engage in meaningful dialogue, thereby building a more inclusive community.
